Daniel Cohen studied photography at the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten (KABK) in The Hague. Early 2007 he decided that internships and periods of training with professional photographers (like Morad Bouchakour) would suit his personal development and career much better than continued study at the Academie. Now, Daniel works on his own projects and as a freelance photographer for print media and advertising agencies.
His work mainly consists of portraits and series. One of his own projects is the series ‘We Want More’. For musicians the world over, the encore is a ritual. It is a chance to give the crowd what they want, and to bask in the limelight some more. But happens in the short space of time after the stars have left the stage and before they return?
Daniel Cohen has created a unique collection of images taken between last song and encore at Amsterdam’s legendary concert venues, the Paradiso and the Melkweg.Cohen captures these private moments, a moment of rest in the eye of the storm, while the crowd on the other side screams for more. His photographs throb with energy and vulnerability, perfectly documenting the atmosphere of the backstage area.
Gogol Bordello, The Roots, Chaka Khan, Animal Collective, Blondie, Erykah Baddu, The Ting Tings, Method Man amongst others. Cohen’s collection is an eclectic mix of artists all caught in the raw: some exhausted, some exhilarated, but all captured masterfully. Cohen was offered all areas access to some of the biggest stars. They didn’t have time to pose or project their public image, they were photographed exactly as he found them. When shooting pictures of Chaka Khan, he was warned by her management “your flash goes off twice and you’ve got a big problem”. His flash went off only once and the result is to be seen at the Image Festival.
